RIP Grete Waitz
Grete Waitz, one of the greatest female marathon runners of all time and a 1984 Olympic silver medalist passed away last week after a six year battle with cancer. The Norwegian was a nine-time winner of the New York City Marathon and she set the world record four times. In 1983, Waitz won the inagural World Championships in Helsinki. She has her earliest success on the track, before the marathon was run at international championships. Waitz ran the 1500 meters at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics, failing to advance to the final in either Games. In 1975 she broke the world record at 3000 meters and she won the 3000 meters at the 1977 World Cup. She passed away on April 19th, survived by her husband Jack. Grete Waitz was buried in Oslo with government honors, she was 57.
